Located in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, Hanson is 20 miles (32 km) south of Boston and is one of the inland towns of the South Shore.

Hanson's origins date back to 1632, when it was settled as the western part of Pembroke. The town gained official incorporation in 1820, taking its name from Alexander Contee Hanson, a Maryland publisher of the Federal Republican newspaper and a U.S. Senator. Hanson was a staunch advocate for free speech and press freedom, which led to him being brutally attacked. His newspaper offices were destroyed by a furious crowd shortly after he published a piece critical of the administration following the start of the War of 1812.

In its early days, Hanson's economy was centered on agriculture, bog iron extraction, and quarrying. The nineteenth century saw the rise of mills along the town's rivers. Today, Hanson is mainly a residential area with some agricultural activity, particularly cranberry farming. The well-known Ocean Spray company was founded in several bogs in Hanson and had its headquarters there until it relocated to Plymouth in September 1977.
