Home Care – Hull, MA
Hull is a charming town in Plymouth County, Massachusetts. It sits on a narrow landmass at the southern tip of Boston Harbor. According to the 2020 census, the city has a population of 10,072. Despite being the smallest town in Plymouth County by land area and the eleventh smallest in Massachusetts, Hull has a population density almost four times higher than the state average.
The town is known for the famous resort community of Nantasket Beach. Over the years, it has served as a summer retreat for many notable individuals, including President Calvin Coolidge and former Boston mayor John F. Fitzgerald, also known as "Honey Fitz." Fitzgerald was the father of Rose Kennedy and the father-in-law of Joseph Kennedy Sr.
The area was initially called Nantasket by the Massachuset tribe, meaning "at the strait" or "low-tide place." It consists of a chain of islands connected by sandbars, forming the Nantasket Peninsula. The Plymouth Colony established a trading post here in 1621 to trade with the Wampanoags. The town was first settled in 1622 and was officially incorporated in 1644, named after Kingston upon Hull in England. Roger Conant was in the area after leaving the Plymouth Colony and before heading to Cape Ann in 1625. Early industries in Hull included fishing, trade, and salvaging shipwrecks. During the Revolutionary War, General Benjamin Lincoln managed the evacuation of Boston from this location in 1778. In 1776, a fort initially named "Fort Independence" was constructed on Allerton Point, with the name later being transferred to the current fort in 1797. In 1901, Fort Revere was built on the same site. Fort Duvall was completed in 1927 on Hog Island (now Spinnaker Island) and was equipped with 16-inch guns, the largest ever deployed by the United States.
Initially, Hull was part of Suffolk County. When the southern portion of the county became Norfolk County in 1793, the towns of Hull and Hingham requested to remain in Suffolk County. By 1803, they had left Suffolk County and joined Plymouth County.
