Home Care – Easton, MA
Easton, located in Bristol County, Massachusetts, is a town within the United States. As of the 2020 census, the town's population stood at 25,058 residents. It is included in the Greater Boston metropolitan area.
Easton, MA, is governed by an elected Select Board, which appoints a Town Administrator to manage daily operations. The Open Town Meeting handles legislative responsibilities. The settlement of Easton began in 1694 and was officially incorporated as a town in 1725.
Clement Briggs was the first settler, establishing his residence near what is now known as Easton Green in 1694. By 1711, the Taunton North Purchase area had become Norton, and by 1713, sixty-nine families had made Easton their home, appointing Elder William Pratt as their first minister. Before these settlements, the area was inhabited by Native Americans who used the land for hunting and as a burial site. During King Philip's War, Metacom, also referred to as King Philip, used parts of Easton as a base for his forces. It wasn't until 1722 that Easton had a legal parish when the East Precinct of Norton was acknowledged. In 1725, the area gained incorporation status as the Town of Easton, a name derived from its previous designation as the "East End" of the Taunton North Purchase, which was shortened over time to Easton. During the Revolutionary War, General George Washington lodged at the Benjamin Williams Tavern on Bay Road, now the second oldest standing house in Easton, while en route to negotiate for cannonballs at the old Perry Foundry in Taunton.
The establishment of the Ames Shovel Works in 1803 marked a significant economic development for Easton. The company became renowned for producing shovels that were instrumental in constructing the Union Pacific Railroad, which facilitated the expansion of the American West. By 1875, the Ames Shovel Works' production was valued at $1.5 million. Prominent members of the Ames family included Oakes Ames, a central figure in the Crédit Mobilier of America scandal, and Oliver Ames, who served as the governor of Massachusetts from 1887 to 1890.
The Ames family's profound influence on Easton's economy was responsible for commissioning several significant buildings designed by H. H. Richardson, the architect behind the Richardsonian Romanesque style and the designer of Boston's Trinity Church.
