Marshfield is situated on the South Shore, where the waters of Cape Cod Bay blend with those of Massachusetts Bay.

Based on data from the United States Census Bureau, the town encompasses 31.74 square miles (82.2 km2). Out of this, 28.46 square miles (73.7 km2) is land, while 3.28 square miles (8.5 km2) or 10.33% is composed of water. Marshfield shares its borders with Massachusetts Bay to the east, Duxbury to the south and southeast, Pembroke to the west, Norwell to the northwest, and Scituate to the north and northeast. It is located 18 miles (29 km) east of Brockton and 29 miles (47 km) southeast of Boston.

The town's name, Marshfield, is derived from the numerous salt marshes that line its coastal edges. Three rivers form the town's borders: the North River along its northern boundary, the South River which splits at the mouth of the North River and runs south through the town, and the Green Harbor River which flows just west of Brant Rock and Green Harbor Point to the town's south.

The South River carves out a peninsula from the remainder of the town, where the villages of Rexhame and the Humarock and Fourth Cliff neighborhoods of Scituate are located. These Scituate neighborhoods can be accessed via two bridges, by boat, or by walking along Rexhame Beach. The Rexhame-Humarock peninsula features a barrier beach with an 84-foot-high (26 m) glacial deposit, one of only two such formations along the eastern coast of the United States.
