Home Care – Mattapoisett, MA

In the South Coast region of Massachusetts, Mattapoisett is part of an area that includes various cities and towns surrounding Buzzards Bay (excluding the Elizabeth Islands, Bourne, and Falmouth), Mount Hope Bay, and the Sakonnet River.

According to the 2020 census, Mattapoisett, situated in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, United States, had a population of 6,508. The central area of the town is known as Mattapoisett Center.

History.

1664 Governor William Brenton acquired Mattapoisett from the Wampanoag chief Metacomet, King Philip. Brenton later bequeathed the land to his son Ebenezer, who sold it. The area was settled in 1750 and officially became a town in 1857, previously a section of Rochester. Signs of earlier Wampanoag settlements, including ancient burial sites, are scattered throughout the city. Mattapoisett originates from the Wampanoag language, meaning "a resting place."

Initially, the local economy was based on logging and farming, but Mattapoisett gained prominence for its significant contribution to the whaling industry. Approximately 400 ships were constructed in the town's shipyards from 1740 until the 1870s, among them the Acushnet, on which Herman Melville, the author of Moby-Dick, sailed before he deserted. Mattapoisett supplied many whaling ships along the East Coast during the early nineteenth century. The last whaler built there was the Wanderer in 1878, shortly after the discovery of oil in Pennsylvania, which marked the end of commercial whaling in the United States.
