Home Care – Pembroke, MA

Pembroke, a historic town in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, is part of the South Shore region of the Boston metropolitan area. Positioned roughly halfway between Boston and Cape Cod, Pembroke offers a blend of rural charm and suburban pockets. As of the 2020 census, the town had a population of 18,361, with a median household income of $119,827.

The town includes neighborhoods such as Bryantville (near the Hanson town line), North Pembroke, and East Pembroke.

History.

The first European settlers, Robert Barker and Dolor Davis arrived near Herring Brook in 1650. According to local lore, the Barkers were initially navigating down the Indian Head River at the junction of the North River in what is now Pembroke and Hanover. However, they ended up heading down the Herring Run to the south, landing in what would become Pembroke. For thousands of years prior, the Wampanoag and Massachusett tribes had inhabited the land, engaging in fishing and farming along the rivers. They named the area Mattakeesett, meaning "place of much fish," due to the annual spring herring run in the local rivers. This land was part of the Major's Purchase, a vast tract acquired from Josias Wampatuck of Massachusetts by English investors. Initially part of Duxbury, Pembroke became an independent town in 1712. It was named after Pembroke, Wales, although the name Brookfield was considered ultimately rejected since a Worcester County town already used it.

One of Pembroke's most significant resources is its water bodies, which include the North River and Indian Head River, as well as several ponds like Oldham, Furnace, Great Sandy Bottom, Little Sandy Bottom, and Stetson Ponds, along with Silver Lake. These water bodies are home to herring, a fish so valued that 1741 the town began regulating its capture and conservation. The herring is celebrated annually at the town's "Grande Old Fish Fry."

The Pembroke Iron Works, founded in 1720, utilized bog iron from rocks at the bottoms of ponds, swamps, and bogs. Ice was harvested from the ponds, stored in icehouses, and used during summer to preserve food. The ponds and streams also powered various mills for grist, flour, and lumber. Eventually, shipbuilding and box manufacturing became vital industries contributing to the town's growth and development.
